Choosing the Right Trailer for You

A trailer for your vehicle offers utility and tremendous value over time. With the available options, it can seem overwhelming to choose which trailer would work best for you. Ultimately, you should choose a trailer based on your anticipated use and what you expect your trailer to be able to handle.

Professionals who work in contracting, construction, utilities, landscaping, and various other trades may need trailers to transport their tools and equipment between job sites. Depending on the nature of your work, enclosed trailers and open flatbed trailers offer different kinds of utility.

Enclosed Trailers

As the name suggests, enclosed trailers protect contents from the elements. If your equipment is sensitive to water, sunlight, wind, or other weather, an enclosed trailer may be the best choice. Make sure your vehicle can easily and safely tow the trailer, and that your vehicle is equipped with sufficient visibility to see around and navigate the trailer.

Enclosed trailers come in various sizes. Some smaller models are perfect for contractors who need to transport power tools and supplies. Larger enclosed trailers can carry large appliances or even small vehicles. Determine what you’ll be hauling and decide whether you need the protection offered by an enclosed cargo trailer.

Open Flatbed Trailers

Flatbed trailers are great for people who need to load and unload cargo and equipment quickly. They are especially advantageous for landscapers who need to transport materials, plants, large riding mowers, hedge trimmers, and other landscaping tools from place to place.

Having an open trailer for landscaping equipment helps keep the equipment cleaner than an enclosed trailer would. If grass clippings and debris fall into an enclosed trailer, it’s much more of a hassle to clean. When carrying landscaping equipment like lawnmowers in an open flatbed trailer, the wind will blow away a great deal of grass clippings and you can easily sweep off the rest.

Ultimately, the choice of the best trailer is up to you. Consider which options offer the utility you need and look for one that will provide value in the long run. Both enclosed and open flatbed trailers are available in several sizes with various options, so shop around and find one that seems right for you.
